Castles in Bellinzona.

For the first weekend of Kara's visit, we traveled to Ticino (the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland) and saw what life was like on the other side of the Gotthard Tunnel. It was fantastic! The region definitely has a more Mediterranean feel, with plenty of sunshine and palm trees and a more relaxed pace of life.

Dusk in Lugano

Kara and I stayed in Lugano and then traveled around the area using the trusty FART system. One of the places we visited was Bellinzona, which is famous for its multiple castles.

We toured the castle closest to the city center, Castelgrande.

We also took a quick peek into Collegiata dei Pietro e Stefano, in which a priest was giving tours to a group of children.

We finished our afternoon at Montebello Castle, which is a stiff uphill hike from the main part of town. The view was pretty great. Probably my favorite part was sitting under a tree on the castle grounds looking out over the valley and the surrounding mountains and just enjoying the breeze and the sun and smell of the grass and the buzz of the bees. It was quite idyllic, in fact.
