The Dead Sea.

During my stay in Israel, Jessi, Jessi Jr., and I took a road trip to the Dead Sea. Similar to almost all of the road trips that we've taken together, we wound up getting dreadfully lost, through absolutely no fault of our own. So, instead of taking the road towards the Dead Sea, we drove towards the West Bank, where we really did not want to go. It took a while, but eventually we got onto the right road, and on our way to the Dead Sea.

Driving along a border with the West Bank behind a PA bus.
As we were driving to the Dead Sea, it was pretty entertaining to pass signs as we went further and further below sea level. I don't think I've ever been below sea level before! Once we got to the Dead Sea, we had time to check into our hotel and quick run across the street for a dip in the Sea. Jessi and I took turns swimming and holding Jessi, Jr.

It really was a strange feeling to be floating in the Dead Sea. It really pushes you up- you can't not float. It's almost hard to get out of a floating position, because you can't push your legs back down into the water very easily. But it was pretty cool- the chemist in me was fascinated by the water and the chemistry behind the area. Also, I thought it was really interesting, because the water didn't sparkle. Even when the sun was shining, the water was really matte and non-sparkly. So interesting!

Our hotel included dinner, so Jessi and I dressed up and traipsed down to the dining room and had a very nice dinner, actually. I was pretty impressed, for hotel food especially. We enjoyed watching the elderly Russian ladies squirrel away huge portions of their meal in baggies that they had brought when they thought no one was looking.

After dinner, we hung out in the hotel room and went to bed early, because we are wild women!

The next morning, we decided to drive further south to see the Dead Sea salt works. And then we thought it would be a great idea to go to a scenic overlook that was advertised, not realizing that it would entail a lot of driving on small quasi-roads in the middle of nowhere. I will not say that we were lost, but I will not say that we knew exactly where we were going. But this is how we like to travel, apparently!

Fortunately, we did find an overlook or two, and the views were spectacular in a desert-y sort of way. I would never chose to live in the desert, but the huge areas of absolutely barren land are really interesting, and the rock formations were pretty cool.

From there, we went to Masada, but I have enough pictures that it warrants its own post!
