Mexico: Beaches, sunsets, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves.

Sometime this fall, when I was thinking about the time in between Switzerland and Ann Arbor, a friend asked me if I was planning to take any sort of relaxing vacation in between jobs, since I didn't get to between my PhD and first postdoc (I defended on a Friday, went to a conference the next week, and was in Alaska for field work by the week after). At first I was all American about it and thought of course not, but I couldn't get away from the idea of a vacation on a beach, watching the sun rise and set, falling asleep to the sound of the waves, with nothing to worry about except which book to read. I started batting the idea around, until my friend Sarah saw the resort Coco Tulum featured on a blog she was reading and sent it to me, knowing that it would be perfect. And, to be honest, it was!

Coco is a small resort, with private cabanas right on the beach. It isn't as expensive as it sounds, because the bathrooms are shared and the amenities are basic (but definitely sufficient). I was attracted to the smallness of it and how beautiful it looked, but the real selling point was the promise of falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. When I was growing up, we used to spend time on a lake in Nebraska, and us girls would sleep in the enclosed porch with the windows open and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. And now we fall asleep to the sound of the waves at our cabin by Duluth. I sometimes have trouble sleeping, but never with the sound of waves. When I read some of the reviews of Coco and saw that people were complaining that the waves were too loud, I knew it was the right place for me!

My friend Tiffany (from my days at Boston University) ended up meeting me there, and we had a really lovely time, waking up with the sunrise, walking and reading and touring some ruins, watching the sun set, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves.

It was so nice to leave behind the cold, snowy Minnesota weather and to land in humid, green Mexico. It only rained the first day-ish, so we had good weather for most of the trip. But when it rained, it definitely meant business!

Our cabana was really nice, with a front porch and hammock to relax in.

One of the first days we toured the ruins at Tulum, which had a beautiful setting above the water.

By far, the nicest times were sunrise and sunset.

We also enjoyed walking along the beach- you can walk for miles, and the beach is never very crowded!

The resort also had a nice shaded area on the beach with chairs and hammocks, which was the best place to read. I managed to avoid major sunburn, even, which is quite the accomplishment for me!

It was completely relaxing, and I can't imagine a more beautiful place. I'd definitely go back in a heartbeat!
