My sunny Saturday hike by Lago di Lugano.

Last weekend was the third rainy weekend in a row, so I made up my mind to find the nearest sun, wherever it was, and to take a hike there. Luckily, the nearest sun was in Ticino, so only about 220 km away and still within range of my GA!

I woke up early to rain and fog, and left my house by 8.30 am to start my adventure. The first part of the train ride was rather gloomy.

Soon enough, we went through the Gotthard Tunnel and exited on the other side to bright blue skies and sun! People on the train were so excited to see the sun that they started clapping and cheering, which was amusing.

Eventually I made it to the start of my hike, at Mont San Salvatore near Lugano. The weather was amazing: sunny and 70's F (about 10 C warmer than in Zurich!). Much of the hike was through a chestnut tree forest. Apparently some trees in the forest were blooming or pollen-ing or whatever they do, so they whole forest smelled really sweet. And there were little geckos (?) everywhere!

There's a gecko! At least I think it was a gecko?

It was really nice to be outside and to soak up the sun. The hike ended in Morcote, a cute little town right on the lake, and I had time to sit by the water and enjoy an ice cream before catching my bus to start my voyage back home.

Of course, on the way back home, we went from sunny and beautiful on one side of the tunnel to rainy and 20 degrees colder on the other side. Overall, I spent 8 hours on the train and 4 hours outside, but it was totally worth it!
